About Avery Grant

Hi, I’m Avery Grant

I’ve started more budgets than I can count. For years, the pattern was always the same: a fresh spreadsheet, a burst of motivation, a few good weeks — and then one surprise bill or one unplanned dinner, and the whole thing collapsed. I’d decide I was just “bad with money” and quit.

Here’s what I eventually figured out: I wasn’t bad with money. I was treating it like a willpower problem when it was really a mindset and systems problem. That shift changed everything for me, and it’s the reason The Paystream exists.

Why I started The Paystream

Most money advice is written for people who already have money. It assumes you have slack in your budget, time to spare, and a cushion to fall back on. I wanted a place that talks to everyone else.

The Paystream is for:

  • People living paycheck to paycheck who are tired of being told to “just save more.”
  • First-time freelancers and side-hustlers trying to earn their first extra dollar.
  • Parents piecing together income around family life.
  • Couples trying to manage money together without fighting about it.
  • Anyone who has felt that sick, sinking feeling when an unexpected bill lands.

If you’ve ever felt behind, stupid, or quietly anxious about money, you’re exactly who I’m writing for. You’re not alone, and you’re not starting from zero — you’re starting from right here.

Where my perspective comes from

I’m not a Wall Street analyst, a finance celebrity, or a licensed financial advisor. My perspective comes from two places, and I lean on both:

  • Lived experience. I’ve had budgets fail, felt the panic of a surprise expense, and tested strategies in my own real life — the ones that worked and plenty that didn’t.
  • Years of homework. I’ve spent years studying personal finance, testing tactics, and talking with people in genuine financial stress, then translating what I learn into plain, practical steps.

I’ve been there, and I’ve done the homework. That’s the whole foundation of what I write here.

Overspending one month is not failure. Quitting is failure.

What I believe about money

  • Money is mostly psychology, not math. The math is usually easy. The mindset is the work.
  • Starting small is a strategy, not a consolation prize. Tiny, automated, consistent actions beat heroic one-time efforts.
  • Systems beat willpower. Automate the right behavior so it happens whether or not you feel motivated.
  • Slipping is normal. Recovery matters more than perfection.
  • A budget is permission, not punishment. It should feel freeing, not depriving.

What you can expect from me

  • Real, conservative numbers — “$10–$15 per paycheck,” not “a little.”
  • Honesty about effort, timelines, and trade-offs, even when the answer is “this takes a while.”
  • Plain English. Any finance term gets explained the moment it shows up.
  • One clear, doable next step at the end of every guide.

What I won’t do

  • I won’t shame you — ever — for your debt, your spending, your income, or your past.
  • I won’t pretend to be something I’m not. I’m not a credentialed financial, tax, or legal professional. I share my experience and research; for decisions about your specific situation, please talk with a qualified professional.
  • I won’t promise guaranteed income, returns, or overnight results. Anyone who does is selling something.
  • I won’t assume you have resources you don’t. No “just skip the lattes.” That’s condescending and mathematically useless.
  • I won’t bury the takeaway. There’s always a practical next step.

Where to start

If you’re new here, start with The Paystream Method — my step-by-step approach to building income streams in order: stabilize first, then diversify, then let it compound. If debt is what’s weighing on you right now, my guide on how to get out of debt walks through a realistic plan without the guilt trip.

Either way, here’s your assignment for today: pick one small thing — one automatic $10 transfer, one bill you look at honestly, one guide you read to the end. That’s it. That’s a real start.
